Westside Learning Center

Westside residents will soon benefit from a brand-new learning center. This community center will offer education, care, and support services to infants, toddlers, and their families.

The plan includes a lab dedicated to nursing and health science students, classrooms, and offices. Thanks to Rep. La Shawn Ford’s legislative efforts, it received $5 million in state funding this year.

Tutoring

WSLC provides free tutoring services to all students in various subjects, including English and math, essay reading/writing assistance, and essay editing assistance. Their tutors are specially trained to offer student-centric service by building confidence while respecting experiences. As needed, walk-in and online sessions can be requested for tutoring sessions – WSLC even has study rooms and a computer lab available!

Westside Learning Center provides tutoring from both professional and student tutors, and students can find their schedules on each campus’s website. Appointments do not have to be made; show up during your scheduled time! Students can receive help in math, reading, writing, and Spanish.

In addition to offering tutoring services free of charge, WSLC also organizes workshops and community events like its Reflection of Knowledge event each year – an assembly of youth from Sisters4Science and Brothers4Science who come together to share their favorite projects from 2017.

The program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen careers through programs like its two-year associate degree and basic and advanced certificates in Health Science career pathways. Adult students may take free GED/HiSET classes at this site and take advantage of state-of-the-art biology labs available at WSLC to complete assignments related to courses.

Computers

The Learning Center Computer Lab serves both as a teaching laboratory for specific classes and an open lab during other scheduled times, offering 18 personal computer workstations equipped with Microsoft Office Professional 2007 program suite and Internet access for student use to complete course assignments, join Zoom classes and study with classmates in small group settings. There are also several small Study Rooms for individual or small group study.

Malcolm X College provides job training programs for manufacturing, transportation distribution logistics, and nursing residents. Students attending Malcolm X College health sciences courses pass licensure exams with over 90 percent success, leading many to employment opportunities at Chicago-area healthcare organizations. With high unemployment levels on the West Side of Chicago, this facility equips West Siders with the skills they need for career growth and success in the workforce.

Once completed, the renovated campus will provide students and residents with an exceptional academic experience. Furthermore, its newly created community space will host large-scale continuing education programming on digital literacy, career success, parenting, etc.

Study Rooms

At WSLC, multiple spaces are designed for students to work alone or in small groups. The library provides several study rooms, while the first-floor atrium of the Business Education building offers comfortable couches for relaxing study sessions. Furthermore, the Student Center building houses a quiet space, a student meditation room, and plenty of grassy areas nearby where they can study on warmer days!

The library offers several enclosed group study rooms for students to use on a first come, first serve basis. These rooms contain whiteboards and enough space for small study groups of up to three. Students may occupy these rooms until asked by library staff to leave. Group studies are encouraged, but we must also respect others who may need that space.

WSLC is committed to equipping its students with the resources and support they require for successful studies, whether that means free prep classes for adult learners seeking their high school diploma or credit courses that prepare students for healthcare roles such as Basic Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician – everything it does at WSLC strives to enhance West Sider lives through bettering lives of residents. Support services, including tutoring and an open computer lab, ensure their studies’ success.

Community Room

Westside Learning Center provides a community room where students and community members can unite. This space can also be utilized by local organizations and businesses for meetings – feel free to reserve it by reaching out directly.

Since June 2003, this learning center has been operating and is a popular choice among students seeking careers in arts, business, humanities, computer science, art, nursing, and pharmacy studies. Furthermore, certifications are also offered by this institution in several fields. Our staff and instructors at this learning center are highly qualified professionals providing various courses, including an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences.

Early this summer, the project received $5 million in state funding through a bill sponsored by Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-8) and other West Side elected officials. They lauded this investment as one that will provide community members with the necessary skills for earning living wages in the future.

Malcolm X College’s West Garfield Park satellite campus will increase student capacity by 50% with this expansion known as the Community Center for Teaching and Learning, featuring classrooms and a multi-use, rentable community space. Malcolm X College hopes that its new facility will serve as a means to connect its students to their surrounding environment and strengthen ties within communities themselves.
