Origins

An iconic European dessert known as coffee cake became widely consumed when people started drinking coffee, although no one can claim sole credit for creating this type of confectionary treat. Most likely, it evolved through various sweet breads and cakes enjoyed alongside their cup of joe.

Jersey Cake is often associated with New Jersey, although its exact origins remain elusive. Today, it has become the most beloved variety of crumb cake in America – making it perfect for special events or weddings alike!

Once upon a time, baking cakes could be pretty labor-intensive. Bakers were limited by not having either stand or hand mixers available to them and required much hard work in beating egg whites into soft peaks before placing them in wood-fired ovens to bake. Today, however, baking powder and electric mixers make this task much more straightforward.

Custom NBA jersey cakes can be created for any team and with any name/number of choice, using chocolate or vanilla cake and covered in buttercream with fondant details for decoration. A 20-30-serving cake makes an excellent way to mark special birthdays, anniversaries, or other milestones in sports fans’ lives.

Ingredients

Cakes generally contain flour, sugar, eggs, fat (such as butter, oil, or margarine), liquid, and leavening agents such as baking soda or powder. Many types of cakes also include other ingredients like fruit preserves or marmalade, nuts, cocoa, dried, candied, and fresh fruit, as well as dessert sauces or whipped creams and the addition of icing or decorations for decoration purposes.[1] These cakes may also be decorated with flowers, marzipan borders piped on, and candied fruit for decoration.[1] Cakes may also be decorated using buttercream royal or other icings, as well as decorated flowers; marzipan piped borders, piped edges adorned with marzipan piped borders, and candied fruit decorations to embellish this unique dessert treat further![1]

Jersey cakes are cake creations in the shape of sports teams’ jerseys that can be customized with player names and numbers for any group in any sport, such as football and baseball, but can be tailored for any other sport or special event. Popular among football and baseball fans, but suitable for any celebration or sport!

To create a Jersey Cake, first, preheat the oven to 350 F and prepare a 13x9x2 rectangular pan with butter or oil and flour, followed by greasing and flouring the bottom and sides. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, soda, oil, and eggs according to package directions until light and fluffy; beat again after each egg addition until combined well before pouring the batter into the pan and baking for approximately 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Once the cake has set, remove its rounded top for a flatter surface and cut a line along its left edge for sleeves, as well as cutting a diagonal line at its peak for collar.

To decorate, frost the cake using food-grade food colorant to match a team’s color scheme. For creating player numbers, place some frosting in a small resealable plastic bag and partially seal it; cut off one corner to pipe the number onto the cake. Additionally, party hosts can include each player’s name on a plate or platter that also houses their jersey cake.

Variations

Make their day special with a Jersey Cake made out of chocolate cake and filled with vanilla buttercream, then adorned with fondant detailing and icing paper accents! Our 20-30 serving capacity cake should make sure they have their fill!

Use heavy whipping cream with a high-fat content for optimal frosting results, adding powdered sugar as needed to sweeten and stabilize it (thanks to Joy of Baking for that tip!). Sliced almonds also provide delicious nutty notes that elevate this dessert!

Make this cake in advance and store it in the freezer until ready to defrost and serve – it should keep for up to one month in plastic wrap inside the fridge! Once defrosted at room temperature for approximately 10 hours before refreezing, it will be allowed to re-whip and soften properly.
