Oppo Reno 4 5g Review

7

The Oppo Reno 4 5g is a capable mid-range device with excellent battery life, effective performance, and a decent design. Despite a few limitations, it’s a solid choice for those looking to get into 5G.

The Reno 4 has a nearly bezel-free 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 2400×1080 pixel resolution. This isn’t as sharp or crisp as the 120Hz variants of phones like the Galaxy S20 FE and OnePlus 8T, but it’s still quite nice for this price point.

Display

The 6.4-inch display on the Oppo Reno 4 5g is one of the standout features of this phone. It’s the perfect size for a device with such a slim body while also being on par in terms of resolution with the Galaxy S20 and iPhone 12.

The AMOLED panel ensures bright, colorful images, excellent contrast, and crisp picture quality. This is an excellent feature in a mid-range smartphone, especially considering the price tag.

It’s not the best screen we’ve seen in a phone at this price point. The Reno 4 Pro has a lower refresh rate than its sibling and lacks a wider RGB color gamut.

Camera

The Oppo Reno 4 5g is a well-specced smartphone with good battery life, effective performance, and an impressive camera set. Its quad-camera system is surprisingly versatile for the price, and its Super VOOC fast charging makes it easy to charge up when you’re on the move.

The primary rear lens is a 48MP f/1.7 binned sensor with laser autofocus, while the 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP mono sensors add to the versatility. Both deliver an excellent range of exposure, contrast, and bokeh results.

The primary camera also offers laser autofocus for video. The Reno 4 5G shoots 4K footage at up to 30 fps and drops to 1080p and 60 fps capture when recording in lower resolutions. Despite a decent Video score of 102, the camera struggles in low-light scenes.

Battery

The battery in your smartphone is one of its most essential features, used to power all the day-to-day functionality. It helps you check the weather, scan the headlines, talk with your friends and family, boast about your high score, or get directions to a new restaurant.

The good news is that the Oppo Reno 4 5g has a fantastic battery. It’s a 4,000mAh unit that lasts a whole day without problems.

It also boasts a super-fast charging system, with a chunky charging brick and an extra-thick cable to give you some of the best charging speeds you can find on the phone today. It can fill to 63% in just 15 minutes or up to 100% in 35 minutes.

It’s a good choice for those who want to take advantage of 5G and aren’t prepared to pay the premiums on a top-tier flagship. It won’t be able to compete with the Google Pixel 4a or Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, but for a few hundred dollars less, you can get a great smartphone that does many things well.

Overall

Overall, the Oppo Reno 4 5g is a solid mid-range option that’s more than worth considering if you’re looking for a 5G phone. It’s slim and incredibly well-built, with a few cameras to boot.

The screen is also a real gem, with inky blacks and zingy colors paired with a max brightness of 600 nits. It’s a display that would be difficult to top with more expensive phones and one of the best we’ve seen in this price range.

Taking photos and videos on the Reno 4 5G is reliably crisp, provided you shoot in good lighting. And while we don’t love the lack of optical image stabilization on the front camera, it can hold its own if you’re steady enough. The zoom is pretty well handled, too, though 2x is the minimum it can go before detail gets too low and digital noise becomes an issue.
